Harvest the Rain: A Homeowner's Guide to Rain Barrels

Join us for an informative workshop exploring Florida's unique water resources, the importance of protecting our aquifers, and how harvesting rainwater can help conserve our drinking water supply while reducing stormwater runoff and pollution. You'll discover how a rain barrel captures rainwater that would otherwise flow into storm drains, allowing you to reuse it to water plants, gardens, and landscapes.

Attendees who complete this educational presentation will qualify to receive a $50 rebate toward the purchase of a rain barrel for installation at their home.

Limit: Two rebates per household.

This workshop will cover:

· Florida's beautiful water landscape and aquifers supplying our drinking water.

· Why these precious water resources need protection as Florida's population continues to grow.

· The 9 Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and how harvesting rainwater supports water conservation while reducing stormwater pollution.

· The components of a rain barrel and how to install one at home.

· Tips for using harvested rainwater safely and effectively in your landscape.

· Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department's water conservation programs, including available water-saving incentives and resources.

Whether you're a new or experienced gardener, interested in sustainable living, or simply looking for ways to conserve water and lower your outdoor water use, this workshop provides practical, research-based information you can put into action in your home landscape.

Rattan Weaving Workshop with Meital Katz-Minerbo

Led by visual artist Meital Katz-Minerbo, attendees will get to create their own custom rattan object that’s both decorative and functional.

Rattan is a type of climbing palm that thrives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia—particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and parts of Sri Lanka and India. It is a flexible and natural material that can be weaved into many different objects. Rattan weaving is a practice that requires a balanced combination between hand strength and mobility.

In this workshop, Meital will teach basic principles of one of the most antique crafts, creating something new by channeling the past. The workshop will begin with an artist talk where Meital will give context to the historic connection between horticulture and arts and crafts as a female practice, including how weaving became part of her own art. She’ll answer any questions before moving onto the second part, a hands-on experience of working with Rattan.

What to know:

  • Every participant should wear working clothes and expect to get a bit wet as Rattan needs to be moist to activate its elasticity.

  • The minimum age to attend the workshop is 15 years old, must have a parent or guardian in attendance.

Instructor Biography

Meital Katz-Minerbo is an international visual artist that incorporates crafts into her art installations. For the last decade her practice has been centered in developing an alternative visual language mixing elements from popular culture and fashion with botany and nature. She has a bachelor's and MFA degree in art education, and is a professional academic art lecturer who combines theory and practice into immersive studio and workshop experiences.
