Glenn Hilton, president of the Bonsai Society of Miami, co-owner of Miami Bonsai Specialist, and horticulture specialist presents BONSAI: The art of growing and keeping miniature trees.
This is part of a series of programs to learn about the ancient art of bonsai. Glenn will teach you the history, guidelines, and techniques of bonsai and how to start your own bonsai tree. We recommend you sign up for upcoming programs—see below—to learn about different styles of bonsai and get additional hands-on experience working on trees.
April's focus is black olive (Bucida spinosa) trained in the windswept style.
In the windswept style, we try to create the effect of a tree blowing in the wind as we would see with trees growing along a coastline.
Instructor bio:
Glenn Hilton is a horticultural specialist for the Village of Pinecrest, President of the Bonsai Society of Miami, and co-owner of Miami Bonsai Specialist. He was fortunate to study under South Florida bonsai pioneer Joe Samuels of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, serving as his apprentice for 13 years. Joe’s training, vision, and remarkable foresight for the future of bonsai deeply inspired Glenn and drew him into the art form himself. Through his involvement with the Bonsai Society of Miami, Glenn has had the opportunity to learn from renowned bonsai masters such as Ben Oki, Roy Nagatoshi, Kunio Kobayashi, and others. He has also gained invaluable knowledge from South Florida and international bonsai artist Ed Trout, as well as local artists including Mary Miller, Mike Carttret, and many more. Glenn is passionate about teaching and sharing what he has learned throughout his bonsai journey, and he hopes to support and inspire others in their own bonsai experiences.
