Explore the versatility of palm fronds and learn traditional weaving techniques in this hands-on workshop.
Basketry and textiles have been part of human history since the earliest civilizations. Across cultures, people have developed weaving techniques using the plant fibers available in their surroundings. Palms, which thrive in South Florida’s tropical climate, have long been an important resource for creating baskets, hats, thatched roofs, mats, and a wide range of handmade objects. South Florida alone is home to more than 50 different palm species.
In this hands-on workshop, we will explore palm as a material and learn fundamental basketry weaving techniques. Participants will learn to braid palm leaves and create a woven bookmark to take home. Depending on their progress, they may also begin exploring techniques for creating a small woven mat.
This material exploration is an integral part of the research and practice of textile artist Isabel Infante, who holds a Master’s degree in Sustainable Textiles and will guide participants through the workshop.
