Executive Director

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden, a living museum, is hiring an Executive Director to join our dedicated team. The Executive Director is the key management leader of the Garden and is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. We are looking for someone who understands the Garden’s important role in our community’s cultural, educational and recreational initiatives and who, through exceptional leadership, can elevate the Garden to a world-class botanical garden.

The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. This is a salaried, exempt position with benefits including health insurance, dental insurance, retirement plan and paid time off.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for fiscal management of the Garden, including operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, and maintaining the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Develops and grows fundraising partnerships through grants, sponsorships, and major donors.
  • Represents the Garden in communications with the City of Miami Beach and other key stakeholders. Strengthens relationships with City of Miami Beach officials and elected leaders.
  • Raises the Garden’s profile as one of the City’s key cultural assets by fostering relationships with local businesses, residents, arts and cultural organizations, and community organizations.
  • Ensures compliance with and renewal of the City of Miami Beach Management Agreement.
  • Collaborates with Marketing and Social Media Consultant/ Manager on media outreach initiatives.
  • Strengthens Membership Program, including cultivating new relationships and nurturing existing relationships.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including the City of Miami Beach, members, guests, and residents.
  • Ensures compliance with hospitality-related licensing, contracts, and applicable regulations.
  • Works with the Board on identifying and proposing additional sources of income, including capital budget requests and potential G.O. Bond inclusion.
  • Oversees personnel and HR-related functions.
  • Ensures retention of a diverse group of highly qualified staff and volunteers by providing opportunities for career coaching, growth, and personal development.
  • Provides monthly reports to the Board, communicates with the Board on all significant Garden developments and works with the Board on strategic planning. Provides support on Board recruitment initiatives.
  • Develops event, educational, and cultural initiatives with Program and Events Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Education and Abilities:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant work experience; five years of management experience
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook
  • Experience with multitasking in a demanding environment
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Attention to detail and adherence to standards
  • Positive approach to learning in role and identifying own training needs as appropriate
  • Flexible approach to role – must be available to work different shifts including some evenings and weekends

Qualities of an ideal candidate include:

  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred, but not required)
  • 3-4 years of nonprofit management experience
  • Grant writing and fundraising experience
